Suicide has become the leading cause of death for many first responders — not fires, not violent calls, not accidents.
In Colorado, more police officers and firefighters have died by suicide than in the line of duty. That’s why Denver’s decision to cap mental health benefits at just 12 sessions a year isn’t just disappointing — it’s dangerous.
First responders face repeated exposure to trauma, chronic stress, and often carry the emotional weight of the worst days in other people’s lives. They’re more likely to struggle with PTSD, depression, and substance abuse — and yet, stigma and lack of access still stand in the way of support.
Mental health services aren’t a luxury — they’re life-saving. Limiting them sends the message that their well-being is optional. But here’s the truth: when we fail to care for those who care for us, everyone’s safety is at risk.
We can and must do better.
