@BiekeDepoorter met Agata Kay by chance in a strip bar in Paris. This encounter would be the beginning of Depoorter’s multiyear, multiform project Agata (2017–2020), which examines the complex relationship between photographer and subject, including the negotiation of creating public engagements and exhibitions. Intertwined narratives are threaded via a combination of images and letters between Depoorter and Kay, with the dialogue always returning to the ever-present reflex of self-awareness and self-reflection. Agata is a project that never lands on any sort of conclusive truth, highlighting the slippery nature of depiction in situations where power, responsibility, and control are in a constant state of flux. See the project in Close Enough, at ICP through January 9. More on the exhibition through the link in bio. Image: Bieke Deporteer, Agata, from Agata, a collaboration with Agata Kay, Beirut, Lebanon, August 4, 2018. © Bieke Depoorter / @MagnumPhotos
