Rest in paradise, Aunt Val. Aunt Val was always the fun, youthful aunt. Losing her was probably the first death I was old enough to understand and process death. She was diagnosed with stage 4 HER2 positive breast cancer and lived less than 3 years after her diagnosis. Even though she had her annual mammograms they missed it. About 7 months prior they had found what they thought was just a calcium deposit but it was actually the start of the cancer. Had she or our family pushed to have a biopsy things may have been different. After her diagnosis, my mom had two other sisters diagnosed with breast cancer.
