Celebrating the first day of the new year with these stunning pictures of a modernist architectural jewel captured in a winter wonderland setting. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Edith Farnsworth House was designed and constructed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe between 1945 and 1951. The house was constructed as a one-room weekend retreat in a rural setting in Plano, Illinois, about 60 miles southwest of Chicago’s downtown. Farnsworth, a celebrated research physician, commissioned Van der Rohe to design the country house. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While Farnsworth lived there in the 1950s to 60s the house was decorated with her preferred taste of Scandinavian and Italian furniture from designers such as Florence Knoll, Jens Risom, Bruno Mathsson and Franco Albini and with Asian antiques. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Conceived as a glass pavilion, the home takes full advantage of relating to its natural surroundings and thus achieving Mies' concept of a strong relationship between the house and nature. The single-story house consists of eight I-shaped steel columns that support the roof and floor frameworks, and therefore are both structural and expressive. In between these columns are floor-to-ceiling windows around the entire house, opening up the rooms to the woods around it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The stunning photos used here were taken by Jason Schmidt for House and Garden. #miesvanderrohe #modernarchitecture #modernistarchitecture #midcenturymodernarchitecture #midcenturymodern #edithfarnsworth #farnsworthhouse #chicagomodernism #chicagoarchitecture #franklloydwright
