Africa is a continent with so much surf and so many incredible and diverse people. At the bottom of the great continent, in the Xhosa speaking region of South Africa’s Eastern Cape sits Jeffreys Bay. A place we visit once a year during the @wsl JBay Open. Our programs fuse surfing with mentorship and care. Ever wondered why surfing fits the model so well? It’s the role of ‘stoke’. Khanyisani demonstrates stoke in this clip from JBay. Can you imagine what riding this wave does for the soul? Especially for a grom living in the super gnarly urban and tough downtown area of Point, Durban. He spends the first part of the wave marvelling at it and then thinks, “I need to surf this gift well.” He then nails the turn, rides the rest of the wave and banks it as one of the best waves of his life so far. Surfing, and our programs, have turned Khanyisani’s life around. Khanyisan’s mother literally says “surfing saved our lives.” So when we see this clip we get a little emotional. Keep shredding Khanyisani! 🌍🇿🇦🛖🏄🏾♂️🏄🏾♀️ Clip: @cee_sonke 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
