Bottom of the Hill is among several businesses along a busy corridor in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood whose owners say a proposed protected bicycle lane could seriously impede their day-to-day operations.
“I’m all for bicycle safety. I’m all for people not driving,” Ramona Downey, co-owner of the 350-capacity club that has hosted local and touring indie rock acts with small budgets and loud guitars for 31 years, told The Chronicle. “But I don’t know if we could survive if there were a protected bike lane in front of our venue.”
The proposal from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, presented as part of its July planning update, is part of the agency’s quick-build program. It would allow SFMTA to upgrade the existing bike lane to a parking-protected bike lane separated from vehicle traffic within weeks and with minimal input from the community.
