Last year, I listened to Sophias memoir - The Baddest Bitch in the Room - and was surprised to hear that she managed RZA or that I’d never heard of her being widely recognised as the first Asian woman in hip-hop. I was so excited, and glad, to hear her story being told in her own words! Over a year later, it is true honour to have her as the inaugural @babeswithblades print cover star. Her work as a mentor, martial artist, mother and storyteller embodies the spirit of the magazine as well as her championing unheard voices through her practice which is what the whole reason I wanted to start the project. Action, and the associated disciplines, especially in the Western world, has quite notoriously neglected why anyone else aside from cis-het white guys might fight; we don’t need more stories like American Sniper ey. @kareemblack shot the effortlessly stylish Sophia in the Shaolin temple (where you’ll find pictures of the RZA, the Wu-Tang Clan, Michelle Yeoh) and more and in her home, New York City.
