Today commemorates the stolen children, and honours the survivors of the residential system, their families and communities. But the work of honouring takes more than just one day. Today we take time to listen, to learn and to reflect on the continuing legacy of colonial violence. Tomorrow, and every day, we act . 🧡 September 30 is an important and direct response to Action 80 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Showing support today, however you can, is an important first step on the path of reconciliation: wear orange, explore educational resources online, donate to Indigenous organizations, or read the TRC Calls to Action. ⁣It is a time to feel deeply. These words from @IndigenousTourismOntario say it best: “We are all on a lifelong journey of learning and experiencing the world. We hope that on this day, you take a step forward on that journey and remember that while September 30 serves as a valuable opportunity for Indigenous Peoples, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation, strong allyship is essential year-round. The path towards reconciliation is ongoing; we encourage everyone to embrace meaningful partnerships and continue to learn and engage in conversations about Truth and Reconciliation throughout the year.” Today Ontario’s Highlands reaffirms our commitment to reconciliation - to listen to, hear, share and amplify Indigenous stories and voices - and recognizes that this tourism region exists on unceded Algonquin territory. To the southeast, Ontario's Highlands is on Mohawk territory. To the west/southwest, Ontario's Highlands is on Ojibwe territory. We recognize and deeply appreciate the ancient and continuing connection of these nations to this place. We are thankful for the contributions Indigenous peoples make and have made in shaping and strengthening this land. ⁣⁣🎨 : August Sunset, Crotch Lake by Alfred G.
