After being abandoned as a Coast Guard station, Governors Island in New York Harbor was sold by the federal government to the City of New York for one dollar in 2002. Andrew Moore was commissioned to photograph the site prior to its redevelopment. The island had been used for military and residential purposes for over two hundred years, and Moore focused on the architecture that bears witness to this history. Here, the photographer amplifies the humor of Tom Loftin Johnson’s 1930s mural depicting American soldiers fleeing a battle in the War of 1812. Moore’s clever framing causes the pictorial space of the painting to converge with the real space of the adjacent bathroom.
