Having a sick baby is heartbreaking, but here are some simple tips to help you get through it. Remember babies only breathe from their nose until about 3-4 months old, so helping them gently clear their airway is a must to keep them home. Suction with saline: make sure they are swaddled and only suction when baby is having trouble eating, sleeping, or breathing. Too much suctioning can cause swelling in the nose. Offer extra feeds: if baby isn’t tolerating feeds, try small amounts of organic pedialyte or with a syringe. Bathe before bed: for extra help in loosening up secretions, steam the shower while baby is in the tub. Cuddle upright: the only good part of kiddos being sick is lots of cuddles, when possible keep them upright. Humidifier while asleep: this is magic! Keep humidifier at a distance of about 3 feet away from baby. Red flags to watch for: baby less than 2 months with a temperature >100.4 F, too tired to eat and stay hydrated, or any signs of difficulty breathing. As always listen to your mama gut, and trust that you’ve got this! Reminding myself of this daily right now. ☺️ How else can I help?
