This month @sonymusic’s Social Justice Fund and @thejaguarfoundation launched the report ‘Progressing Gender Representation in UK Dance Music’. The report provided evidence of gender disparity across the live industry, radio airplay, streaming, charts and festivals, with quantitative research led by our Insight team at #4thFloorCreative.
After interviewing artists, DJs and stakeholders in dance music, discriminatory issues that female and non-binary people face, from pay disparity to a lack of safe spaces in venues, were noticed.
The report uncovered a lack of mainstream representation for female or non-binary artists, with just 5% of UK charting dance music featuring exclusively female or non-binary primary artists. A similar pattern is evident across radio airplay, with less than 1% of the top 200 most played tracks from 12 UK radio stations across 2020-21 featuring only female or non-binary artists. Meanwhile, female-fronted acts made up just 25 percent of the track list on key electronic music playlists on Spotify.
A big thanks to our drinks sponsors that helped making the launch event so special, @trip.drinks @drinknice @swishcocktails! 🥂
The full report is already available and it’s worth a read. Let’s be the change! 💜
