According to the Second World Ocean Assessment, the main threats to marine ecosystems come from human activities, such as fishing, aquaculture, shipping, sand and mineral extraction, oil and gas exploitation, the building of renewable energy infrastructure, coastal infrastructure development and pollution, including the release of greenhouse gases.
