I took a short trip to Houston this weekend to see my Mom, who lives in College Station. I grew up in Pasadena, TX (just south of Houston) until we moved to College Station in 1989. 2 years before we moved, I recorded RELIGIOUSLY every Saturday night (on cassette tapes) a live broadcast on KKBQ (93Q) of Club 6400. In addition to new wave radio hits, the DJs would play industrial, synth-pop, goth, techno, EBM, new beat, house, and Hi-NRG; all this music I had never heard before. It was mind blowing and I was forever hooked! As a kid, I would beg my grandfather to take me to Record Rack, a record store a few blocks away where you could find all this music on vinyl. I still have all these records in my collection and this music started me on my dance music journey, collecting vinyl and djaying. Sadly, a fire destroyed 6400 in January ‘89. After the fire, Club 6400 tried to come back onto the scene but over time a few other clubs in the area absorbed the 6400 crowd by hosting 6400 tribute / reunion nights. One of those clubs from that era, just a few blocks from the original 6400 has kept this tradition alive. @numbersnightclub opened in ‘78 and is STILL GOING! It’s been a home for Houston’s LGBTQ+ community for 43+ years, as a club and concert venue. @marky_desade a gorgeous and beloved member of the community has made a documentary about Numbers. It will have its premier @insideoutfestival the end of THIS MONTH. Follow @marky_desade and @numbersdoc for updates (Make sure you check out the trailer!) The sound system in this place is impeccable. I danced my ass off! They have music videos projected on massive screens and have monitors throughout the club. Can’t wait to come back!
