Photos mean different things to different people, this shot reminds some of us of from the 80’s that Mark Richards was the 4 time world champ, no one would ever beat that record. To us surf photographers from that era , they know this was shot on film with a Manual focus lens , a 1000mm century lens shot at 250th of a second because we were using Kodachrome 64 .
But to me the memories of this photo was my brother walking down the beach this day to tell me that my father had passed away, I thought he was pretty old at the time, I was not even 30 but I’m now older than he was when he died. I remember feeling numb at the time and later talking to my mom about it and then she said to me, out of the blue ... you have to start staying in touch , you travel around the world and we have no idea where the hell you are, we think your in Australia and then we find out your in Indonesia. We don’t here from you sometimes for 6 to 8 months, I broke down in tears right then and promised I would never loose touch again. My mom is 92 and I’m trying to make it back to see her on the east coast as much as I can before she’s gone. The world seems so different when someone you love is gone. Appreciate people when they are here, they won’t always be. @markrichardssurfboards #pipeline wave #vanspipemasters
