A review recently published by the team at our National Centre for Miscarriage Research has found that women with low vitamin D levels are at an increased risk of miscarriage.
Low levels of vitamin D have been linked with pregnancy problems such as pre-eclampsia and preterm birth, and research shows that taking a low dose vitamin D supplement can help reduce the risk of these conditions. But it is still unclear whether early vitamin D treatment could also protect against pregnancy loss, including for women and pregnant people at high risk of recurrent miscarriage.
To see if they could find a significant link between vitamin D deficiency and miscarriage, Tommy’s experts analysed a number of studies carried out by other research teams. Although our researchers found low vitamin D levels were linked to an increased risk of miscarriage, the studies were limited. This means they are now recommending that future research looks at whether giving vitamin D treatment before conception can help prevent pregnancy loss.
Please note that we’re not able to offer medical advice on social media. If you have any personal questions about how much vitamin D you should take during pregnancy, we’d recommend speaking to your GP or midwife.
