Grab your ‘ukulele, it’s #TalkStoryTuesday. This week we are inviting you to experience the ‘Ukulele Festival on July 17.
This festival, being the first and largest in the world, highlights the iconic instrument and Hawaiian art and culture through music. The festival has been around since 1972, and this year events will be broadcasted virtually.
Did you know ʻukulele were introduced to the Kingdom of Hawai'i by Portuguese immigrants? They called the instrument a braguinha, but Hawaiians deemed it a “ʻukulele,” which translates to “jumping flea." There are two theories as to how it got its name. The first being that it was a favorite of an official in the court of King Kalakaua named Edward Purvis, who had the nickname "jumping flea." The second is that the way someone's fingers play along the ʻukulele the strings mimic a jumping flea.
Regardless of how its name came to be, the ʻukulele is now deeply intertwined with Hawaiian culture.
