Today we mark the 40th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. During his opening remarks, UN Secretary-General, @antonioguterres underscored the importance of "continuing the vital work of the Regular Process now underway to ensure that all the decisions about the ocean are underpinned by the best science, and the best social and economic expertise"
Science was at the core of the negotiations leading up to the adoption of the Convention and of its implementation. The Regular Process continues to advance our knowledge of the ocean. This global mechanism, established by the General Assembly, brings together experts from around the world to provide an integrated view of environmental, economic and social aspects of the state of the marine environment, underpinned by ocean science.
The third cycle of the Regular Process, currently underway, is building upon the past two World Ocean Assessments, as well as the gaps and needs identified through them, to further strengthen the science-policy interface and ensure ocean sustainability.
Understanding the ocean and our impact on it is the first step to protecting it. Send, save, and share this post to #sharetheknowledge.
