Race recap of the BKLYN MILE with my son!My son + I participated in the BKLYN MILE powered by @hoka + we were excited. We ran the @quitafrancique Friends and Family Mile. Although I only knew her for a short time, my memories of her are warm and made this back of the pack runner feel like I was at home. I wanted my son to experience that beauty in a running environment after showing a mild interest in running again while on vacation. I also kinda sorta swindled him w/ ice cream + a medal. In turn he gave up his video game time to hang out w/ his mama.He's read, watched + a few times experienced the harsh realities of having me as a mom - a person with a sizeable platform + encounter some not so glamorous commentary associated to my body and its performance. Sometimes he asks me why do I opt to stay. As wordy as I can be, I love when I can show him. Today was that opportunity. Although you can see his very teenager like personality in this video he thoroughly enjoyed his time out, battling the heat. We saw a fellow #T1D teenagers on the course and without us saying much, I know he felt less alone.Without trying to sell him on it, I wanted him to see + feel the inclusive world that I want in fitness. It doesn't look like a side show but a natural everyday occurrence. I think he gets it + I love that he was a part of it.Today is a rough day for me. It's 5 years since I miscarried with my twins - I'll never forget them as I haven't forgotten the others. I learned about my endometriosis diagnosis days later from them. Months later, some learned my story for the first time. This was secretly a beautiful way to celebrate them. I told myself I'd have a glass of wine to toast in their honor. Instead, I opted to hug my son tight over ice cream.
