This must change...there needs to be more deaf awareness in schools so that every deaf student can reach their potential. That’s why parents of deaf children Shikha and Juliet have started an open letter to the Government calling for more Teachers of the Deaf, as they know first-hand the positive impact that they have in the education system. They think the Government needs to take action to address a 17% drop in numbers of Teachers of Deaf since 2011 in England - which has meant fewer teachers have been able to access the support they need to be deaf aware. This is reflected in a poll of over 5,000 teachers we commissioned last year, which found that 37% of teachers said they had received support from a Teacher of the Deaf. That’s why the SEND Improvement Plan in England must take urgent steps for more Teachers of the Deaf to improve education for deaf children, and give teachers the support they need. Do you agree?
