A bunch OG folks have noted they like Miracle cause it reminds them of Jackson Square. We usually have very little perspective on how a song will be received or what people might compare it to. It’s always interesting when people contemplate our motives in the writing and recording of our tunes. We have our own reasons, but they rarely seem to align with what listeners might assume.
Unlike Jackson Square - which was largely written through alot of trial and error - bashing through songs with the five of us in a room - Miracle was an instrumental demo that @anthony_carone sent over during the pandemic. It was the only way to work.
This next revelation should be embarrassing, but I actually enjoy it: the extent of my recording capabilities is restricted to voice notes. I’m not good with computers. I played the instrumental out of the computer speaker and then I sang over the track in to my phone. I am too impatient to learn how to work protools myself and I think I enjoy having to take on a project with someone else.
Recently, I’ve found that I really enjoy the freedom of writing over something I didn’t come up with. There’s a freedom to not being attached to your guitar or piano where you’re consciously judging the chord pattern and putting up creative roadblocks for mostly dumb reasons.
When Tony sent over the track, he called it “Monolith” for some reason, and it reminded me of The Beatles and Spoon.
I was pretty happy with the verse vibe but stuck on the chorus. I sent it over to @tompeyton who co-produced the album. He’s unlike anyone we’ve ever worked with in that his detachment from the music is what makes his ideas so interesting to me. He’s not emotionally tied to the creative process in the way we are, so he simply sings out what he feels is the most exciting thing that his ears want to hear. That’s how the chorus came out. “I need a miracle” was his idea, and it perfectly summed up the confusion and self loathing I was writing about it in the verses. Thanks Tom. You are a genius!
