City, the great earthwork by Michael Heizer. I was there in late 1994 with Peter Lindbergh and Amber Valletta. We were shooting for Harper’s Bazaar. Michael was a gracious host and showed us the terrain. His land was off the grid in the middle of nowhere, 30 miles away from the nearest paved road. We were not aware that he was working on “City”- he mandated total secrecy. But at the end of the shoot he entrusted Peter to shoot a few remarkable pictures of him on-site. I have a singular memory of that last evening in Nevada: I remember wandering outside of his ranch house at dusk and encountering a vast, mesmerizing depression in the land, punctuated by scattered bulldozers, and being overwhelmed. @therealpeterlindbergh @harpersbazaarus @ambervalletta
