Abri has been in the inpatient rehab program now for 4 weeks & has come such a long way. When we first got here she could barely sit up on her own. She was barely speaking and slept most of the time because of the pain from her feeds running 24/7. The team here was able to readjust her feeds to run only at night so she could be able to participate in therapies during the day to build back her strength. She had a huge list of goals to meet for both OT and PT in order to be strong enough to go home & has met almost all of them faster than any of us thought she would. Abri loves her team here but wants to go home more than anything so she has pushed herself as hard as she possibly can. She is now pushing her own wheelchair, showering on her own, transferring on her own, doing daily arm, leg, hand & lung strengthening exercises, drinking sips of water, eating a few small bites of food, & starting to stand on her own with her prosthetic. Her feeds are still extremely painful but she is slowly starting to have feeds introduced during the day while working out to hopefully get her able to refocus enough to lessen the pain. Thankfully she has met some therapists in here that have chronic stomach pain that have shared their experiences with getting through each day & that has been very helpful for her. She is terrified that pain is now what her life is going to revolve around so to see other people thriving with chronic pain has helped her anxiety quite a bit. She is learning what helps her & singing old Taylor Swift songs has become her go to. All day every day she is listening to & singing her songs. I think every person in here now has Taylor Swift songs permanently stuck in their head. 😂 Floating in the pool also takes pressure off her stomach & she uses her positive self talk when the pain is too much which brings me to tears every time I hear her. Nothing about this place has been easy but it has definitely helped her in many areas & for that we are so grateful. We still have a long way to go in terms of figuring out how to get her pain better managed & getting her eating again but for the first time in a long time I feel like we are FINALLY moving forward. 🙏
