Considered as one of Canada’s most influential contemporary Indigenous architects, Douglas Cardinal is passionate for unconventional and organic forms inspired by his appreciation of landscape and nature present in his upbringing. This flowing architecture influenced by his indigenous heritage and expressionism can be found in his designs of our very own Canadian Museum of History located at the junction of Gatineau and Ottawa. Last pandemic, I had the honour of shooting Mr. Cardinal in his natural habitat where we spent an entire afternoon exploring an empty museum that he designed with a team and a computer the size of a bedroom in the 80s. It was also great to hear Idoia, Mr Cardinal’s lovely wife, share her side of the story and the roadblocks they’ve encountered in the process.
