Today we’re brewing the newest addition to our tea lineup: UNSMOKED LAPSANG✨
Lapsang Souchong is a popular black tea from the Wuyi mountains of Fujian. This small leaf (小种) “xiao zhong” cultivar is fully oxidized and usually smoked with pinewood.
Our Lapsang is grown in the central “Zheng Yan” (正岩) Wuyi mountain region. Nowadays there’s a lot of tea brought into Wuyi from surrounding areas and sold as “Wuyi tea”, but only Zheng Yan tea trees can qualify as a legitimate Yan Cha, Lapsang, or Jin Jun Mei. There’s a few characteristics that you can mimic during tea processing, but you just can’t recreate that unique microclimate and rocky soil conditions found within Wuyishan!
With this in mind, we decided to keep our Lapsang unsmoked to retain and highlight those subtle flavors + Yan Yun mouthfeel of the tea. This tea is reminiscent of a Jin Jun Mei or a high quality Qi Men Hong Cha, with classic citrus zest, some muscatel notes, and a rich mineral mouthfeel... 🤤Pour one up for me homie!
