“Untitled #875 (Black Atlanta),” 1997, was donated to the @metmuseum in 2002 by Vera List, who had purchased the piece after seeing it in “Spring Snow” a 2001 solo exhibition at Julie Saul Gallery. Of course, this acquisition would not have been possible without the aid of the wonderful staff at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, including Associate Curator, Ann Strauss, Senior Consultant of Modern and Contemporary Art, Nan Rosenthal, and Collections Manager, Cynthia Iavarone. This sculpture was greatly inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds,” one of my brother’s favorite films. Having seen it together as children, we were thrillingly frightened, yet amazed to realize that nature cannot be tamed by humanity. Installed in 2002, I was pleased to see a sculpture associated with my brother exhibited inside of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a museum we both loved. “Untitled #875 (Black Atlanta),” 1997, was on view at The Met until 2005. And then, between 2005 and 2006, the piece could be seen in “Above and Beneath the Skin,” a traveling solo exhibition curated by Douglas Dreishpoon and organized by the @buffaloakgartmuseum.
