For Jennifer, running was not something she wanted to lose from her life. Even in the midst of her lung cancer diagnosis, she persisted to find a healthcare provider who encouraged her desire to stay active. She’s learned the importance of running for her mental and physical health.
Jennifer is known on campus as the “Running Dean,” but when people find out about her cancer diagnosis, there’s a different reaction–mostly from a lack of exposure or knowledge. “Many are not sure how to respond, probably because they do not know someone with lung cancer who has survived and has continued to work and run hard. When I talk to folks about my diagnosis, surgery and recovery, most people just want to change the subject. I think it is important to be transparent about my disease, to connect with people, and grow their awareness of cancer and survival. Surviving cancer looks like me!”
After a lobectomy in February of this year, Jennifer recovered, trained and ran two half marathons, each step filled with persistence, strength and hope. She looks forward to running the New York City Marathon this fall in support of lung cancer research.
