I think this most recent profile in @departures by the phenomenal @jenn_tardif and shot by the dreamy @sunnyshokrae synthesizes a lot of things for me... a) the interview itself was epic, Jenn and I had a strong connection that felt/ feels rare & I was able to share things I’ve been wanting to b) the piece itself provides actionable ways (much like who is wellness for itself) for you to change / shift be accountable to yourself and your community in the continual act of healing while also practicing wellness ethically / sustainably which means just challenging yourself to remain persistent c) I am grateful wherever I get to talk about God, but Sunny also captured God all around me. Including my altar to sex and love, hence the crystal dildos next to a statue of Hanuman, devotion in all aspects. We’ve then got me kneeling in front of my darling @salman.toor’s painting “Friday Prayer,” one of my favorite and most meaningful pieces. As a Muslim it feels like a deep honor to remember prayer through a painting everyday. Then you’ve got my desk with a mixtape from my baby @angela.dimayuga and the bakhoor I smoke around the house to make my house smell like what @hishamfageeh calls “Dubai airport” lmfao! My table is laced with all my stationary because obviously since I was a kid I’ve been OBSESSED with notebooks, highlighters... fuck me up with a good ballpoint pen. We love specificity here. Then you’ve got me with these tomatoes I’ve been flirting with in the shared garden of my home. I can’t eat tomatoes but I do love loving them from afar. Lastly, back to Jenn’s guidance. Love talking about God. Let me talk about God forever. I’m just grateful that I get to share more of me these days. I’m a third culture kid, I didn’t grow up in America. So my references are wide and vast. For most of the time living in America I didn’t realize that what I was taught to hide was a gift. I’m showing those gifts more readily these days, just to honor myself and my process. Thank you endlessly to Sunny and Jenn who were a dream to be with, I admire you both so much!
