Since its founding in 1804, the New-York Historical Society has been collecting history as it happens. Today, New-York Historical continues to actively grow its collections to reflect both new events and new perspectives on the past. On display is a selection of objects, recently acquired through purposeful purchases and selective gifts, that speaks to the active life of the collection—to the dynamism of an ever-transforming New York and nation, and to the vitality of history itself.
Among the works on view are Far Eastsiders, aka: Cowgirl Mama A.B & Son Wukong, 2021, a painting by contemporary artist Oscar yi Hou that centers on marginalized communities; a souvenir replica of sculptor Augusta Savage's Lift Every Voice and Sing, created for the 1939 World's Fair; Good Afternoon II: Saint Marks Place, 1986, a depiction of a vibrant punk rock scene in the East Village by Philip Reisman; and Extreme Times Call for Extreme Heroines, 2017, in which artist Betye Saar transforms a racist stereotype into a heroine fighting racism. Curated by Wendy Nālani E. Ikemoto, senior curator of American art
