Sophia & Grant's wedding was a love letter to #Tulsa. They first visited the city together on the way to see his parents in 2020. The couple took meetings with community leaders. They were shaken by the legacy of the 1921 Race Massacre & for the past 2 years they’ve continued to work in support of Tulsa with local leaders, even joining President Biden’s commemoration visit on Centennial weekend in 1921. Knowing that their wedding would come with a lot of media attention, the couple decided to turn what could be an overwhelming personal spotlight into a purposeful one. They asked the local leaders & organizations who they’ve befriended — Dr. Tiffany Crutcher of the @TerenceCrutcherFoundation, community leader @brentomtodd, @tyrancebillingsleyii, @nehemiahdfrank of @thebwstimes, & the @GreenwoodCulturalCenter — to help program a day of education. They dedicated the entire day before the wedding to walking tours of #Greenwood. Dr. Crutcher hosted the morning convening, leading the audience in prayer. Then began the walking tour through John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park, a tour of the Greenwood Rising Museum. Similarly to Reconciliation Park, the museum is committed to educating Americans about the Tulsa Race Massacre & its impact on Oklahoma as a state & our country as a whole. The museum's strategic use of projection mapping, holographic effects, and environmental media directly engaged with the guests & allowed them to explore the history of the Greenwood District on an entirely different level. But guests didn't only experience memories of the past; the museum intentionally sheds light on the visions of success and progress for the present and the future, too. And what better way to end the day than with fashion? Because fashion can play an integral role in progress, innovation, and even community funding, Sophia and Grant took guests to two of their favorite local businesses: @silhouettetulsa — a Black & female-founded retail experience focused on bringing sneakers & streetwear to Tulsa; — and @19and21shop inside of @thebwstimes. Guests left the day with a new understanding of and appreciation for Tulsa and the importance she holds for all of us.
