Congratulations to our friend and collaborator #AiWeiwei who has received the 33rd Praemium Imperiale Award for Sculpture in a ceremony at Asia House in London! Ai Weiwei receives this year's award for Sculpture in recognition of his wide-ranging practice that measures our existence in relation to economic, political, natural and social forces, uniting craftsmanship with conceptual creativity. A striking example of this is his work for his latest exhibition in Venice @abbaziasangiorgiomaggiore “La Commedia Umana – Memento Mori” which uses the ancient craft of glassblowing in Murano and combines it with his unique contemporary vision. Prize officials described Ai Weiwei’s work as being “driven by an indignation at the injustices he sees around him”. Established to mark the centenary of the Japan Art Association, Japan's oldest cultural foundation in 1988, each year the Preamium Imperiale Awards are awarded by the Imperial Family of Japan in the fields of Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, Music and Theatre/Film. All laureates are selected from lists submitted by “international advisors” across a number of countries.
