It's Women in Translation Month! Started by Meytal Radzinski (@readwit), #WITmonth is "an annual celebration of women writers from around the world, writing in languages other than English." Only 30% of translated literature is written by women. (And only about 3% of literature published in the US is translated from another language, but that's a totally different conversation.) Vietnamese literature translated into English is also very underrepresented. Given all of that, here are some books by Vietnamese women translated into English from Vietnamese and French to check out. (Translators are in parenthesis because these wouldn't exist without them--#NameTheTranslator) - "Sunday Menu" by Phạm Thị Hoài (translated by Tôn-thất Quỳnh-Du) - "Last Night I Dreamed of Peace" by Đặng Thùy Trâm (Andrew X. Pham) - "Chinatown" by Thuận (Nguyễn An Lý) - "The Zenith" by Dương Thu Hương (Stephen B. Young & Hoa Pham Young) - "An Insignificant Family" by Dạ Ngân (Rosemary Nguyen) - "The Stars, the Earth, the River" by Lê Minh Khuê (Bac Hoi Tran & Dana Sachs) - "Em" by Kim Thúy (Sheila Frischman) - "The Secret of Hoa Sen" by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai (Bruce Weigl and Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai) - "Spring Essence" by Hồ Xuân Hương (John Balaban) #womenintranslation #womenintranslationmonth #booksintranslation #translated #translatedbooks #books #bookstagram #viet #vietnameselit #vietnameseliterature #vietnam #vietnamese #vietnamesebooks #readtheworld #readingtheworld #bookshelves #bookshelfie #translation #asian #asianbooks #vietnamisnotawar
