@marty_sandiego “THEY DIDNT TEACH US THIS IN SCHOOL, THIS DIDN’T MAKE IT INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS!

We had the pleasure of being hosted by @visitbarbados and taking the #Barbadosheritagetour lead by a living legend Mr.Morris Greenidge. Full of so much knowledge and stories , he brought us to Golden Square, Freedom Park to see the builders of Barbados Wall.
•
I had no idea until he told me that once our ancestors were taken from the #goldcoast if they weren’t taken to Brazil, their first stop was Barbados. From there , most continued on , but the ones that stayed can be found on this wall. 600 years of names recorded for those enslaved who built Barbados .

It was surreal seeing so many recognizable last names and being able to find two of my family names on here. My Great Grandmother was Barbadian , and married a Jamaican. They then moved and raised their kids in Panama as they went there to build the canal. My roots have origins right in Barbados, but as an African American it gets so frustrating not knowing where exactly in Africa we’re from . But let me say this, the fact that you’re here, is proof that your resilient and strong ancestors made it through the middle passage, stopped in Barbados and then where taken elsewhere. There is a direct connection between Barbados and South Carolina, specifically the #gullahgeechee community.” #themoreyouknow
