Have you ever experienced rapid hair shedding? Like clumps of hair that keep falling with no end it sight? This may be a condition called telogen effluvium. Telogen effluvium is a condition marked by diffuse and rapid hair loss that occurs 3-6 months after an extremely stressful experience. Typically there is abrupt hair growth arrest and premature shedding. Stressors include childbirth, surgery, new medications, or a serious illness. We’ve been seeing a ton of post-Covid telogen effluvium in my clinic. No treatment is necessary as it self-resolves once the stress is relieved and hair will resume normal growth over time. However, minoxidil, supplements, low level light therapy, and PRP treatments can be helpful. Make sure to see your board certified dermatologist if you are experiencing signficant hair loss.
