TO NOTE: “I am my own muse, I am the subject I know best. ” ― Frida Kahlo.
The Mexican artist, political activist and provocateur clad in flower crowns through the early 20th century, has long been represented through her own control.
Throughout her career, Kahlo painted 143 works - 55 of which were self-portraits - with a lingering gaze and a single eyebrow perched above observing eyes.
The master of self-representation, who used her surrealist works to chronicle the tumultuous layers of reality that spanned her life has now been reimagined in Frida Kahlo: Life Of An Icon, a multi-sensory experience in Sydney’s The Cutaway.
Both her professional, political and personal are explored across nine transformational spaces, displaying her works in interactive, virtual reality mediums, light displays, curated collections and 360 degree projections.
A kaleidoscope of colours that regularly formed a staple of her craft and clothing, comes alive in its purest form of contemporary appreciation; strolling through the reinvigoration of the portraits that solidified her cult status, one can assume, if the iconic painter were still alive today, she’d be at the forefront of NFTs and VR installations.
Kahlo’s life – both for the art connoisseur and novice alike – was typified by extremes; of intense pain and potent love, enduring devotion and relentless lust, harrowing isolation and global reverence.
What remains clear, almost seven decades after her death, is that a true icon will forever be defined on her own terms.
