My thoughts are with the people of Index, Washington and the surrounding area, currently under evacuation orders from a threatening wildfire. For many of us, this picture book town nestled between the crystalline waters of the North Fork Skykomish river and soaring cliffs of pristine granite is a paradise; a place where reality seems to be at least partially suspended and time seems to move more slowly. An escape portal from the stresses and pressures of the real world, where one is only asked to move thoughtfully and humbly through a landscape that will teach lesson upon lesson to the welcoming mind. And yet, even this place, so insulated from the ‘outside’ world, so mossy and moist as to make a Sasquatch feel right at home, where slugs and mushroom vie for real estate in flawless finger cracks, even here is not safe from the pressures of a changing climate, where rainforests burn for a lack of rain. So today, this place teaches us yet another lesson; that no place is safe, there will be no free passes or exemptions, that global climate change happens across the globe. Let us send thoughts to this special valley, and realize that we must all do what we can to fight the climate crisis, because there is nowhere to hide.
