She is one of the greatest champions, an entrepreneur, a mother, an investor in women’s business ventures and an inspiration to women and girls across the world. Yet media attacks on Williams' appearance have often played upon racist tropes, from critical comments about her appearance to discrimination in drug-testing (she was tested far more frequently than her competitors). As she stated: “The day I stop fighting for equality and for people that look like you and me will be the day I'm in my grave,” and “There weren’t a lot of role models for me to look up to [in the sport] and say, ‘Wow, I want to look like this!’. I kind of had to be that role and be that person... Venus and I started out being successful, continued to be successful, and we were also unapologetically ourselves. We were not afraid to wear braids. We weren’t afraid to be Black in tennis. And that was different.” Thanks to that difference, many young Black athletes have followed the paths paved by the Williams sisters. Tennis players like Naomi Osaka, Grand Slam champion Sloane Stephens, and teen up-and-comer Robin Montgomery have all cited Williams as their inspiration. As the world is getting ready to say farewell to the greatest woman athlete ready to pursue her evolution anytime soon, while she is keeping us on the edge as she is once again making our hearts beat during the US open as she is scheduled today against the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic after accessing the third round, @lesmusesdelafalaisedion wishes to celebrate Venus Williams. As she lately said herself : "I am Serena Williams". All Hail The Legend of Tennis, Serena Williams.
