Knees Over Toes?
Get this one a lot. To me it’s the wrong conversation, instead is can we get full knee Flexion during a squat?
Get the Range, Add the Load
That’s my hierarchy, if you cannot achieve adequate ROM your missing a huge opportunity. The tibia will move forward during the squat, what happens at the pelvis and thorax is based on that moving and if we can create tension in the quadriceps.
If the tibia cannot move forward the hips have to go back. I have opinions on what this can do with certain loaded strategies and risk, but that’s not the point here.
We lose tension when we cannot achieve more adequate ROM. We lose more tension whenWe have to find a mechanical advantage with the hips going back. Which detrains the quadriceps. We lose structural balance with this biomechanical strategy.
There are huge variances with outcomes if we don’t understand what a joints function and there optimal mechanics should be. We need think as certain structures in the body as moving and some as stationary when doing any exercise. This can help us scribe great ROM and more tension, and therefore more value.
