In honor of @kamalaharris our first AAPI VP candidate to ever be named to an American major-party ticket, I remember Alice Fong Yu, one of my many #sheroes, and my grandma, born and raised in California, was initially denied acceptance for her degree in Education, being told no one in the country would hire a Chinese woman teacher. Still #sherose and became the first Chinese American school teacher in San Francisco’s Public School district. When she was told her son with Cerebral Palsy would never walk independently or talk well, she became a speech therapist to help her son, and my Uncle Joie walked and lived independently with a job to his 60s. At 19 she and her 6 friends founded the Square and Circle Club, the first Chinese American Women’s service organization formed to support Chinese communities in San Francisco. I am so proud to learn from her. I am so proud to be an Asian American, and am so proud of my roots.
