“It’s not what I expected, but I’ll adjust.” When Gabe was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma at age 22, she told herself she’d try her best no matter what. Her track season ended early & abruptly that year because of cancer, as it would over the next ten years. Every surgery, procedure, and long day in the hospital was an interruption to her training, racing & life but she kept trying her best anyway, finding hope & not giving up. Trying her best earned her a national title, a spot on the world team, 4th at the Olympic Trials, & many victories & fast times along the way. While she loved winning, her motivation ran much deeper. For Gabe, running served a bigger purpose. It was how she found hope & built a platform to advocate for rare cancer patients. Her grit & ability to adjust to the difficult circumstances she faced allowed her to continue running on hope & sharing it with others.
That’s why in 2017, after starting chemo midway through her track season, she decided to race at the US Championships knowing she was nowhere near her usual best. But she could still try her best - and she did. Although she finished last, clocking her slowest time in years, it was among her greatest victories. “Cancer may have slowed me down, but I haven’t let it stop me,” she said afterwards. Gabe wanted us to see that our goals are worth pursuing, even if we don’t achieve perfection, even if it’s nowhere near our previous best. Every day is a new chance to try our best & be brave in our own way.
Gabe wanted each of us to experience the power, beauty & magic of the strength already deep within us. The same strength each of you helped her find in herself. The power of hope shared. Brave Like Gabe is her invitation to us to be brave like ourselves, to honor it & share it with others so they can do the same.
Gabe chose to try her best. In so doing, she’s shown us that trying our best can move mountains — and is something we all can do. This month we are continuing that legacy and asking you all to share your brave story with us (link in bio). Over the next weeks and months, we hope to highlight all of you living brave like yourselves and continuing to keep #runningonhope
