Repost from @laurencohenfilm • MDC’S TOWER THEATER HAS RECEIVED AN EVICTION NOTICE FROM THE CITY OF MIAMI! I’ve been trying to wrap my head around this all day. Tower Theater is a cultural landmark that is beloved by Miami residents and the film community. Before I ever worked for Miami Film Festival/Tower Theater, I found this cinema because it was the only theater playing Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation. Not only did I fall in love with the film (one of my favorites to this day), but I fell in love with the theater, which quickly became one of my favorite cinemas in Miami. The first film I ever programmed, My Friend Dahmer, showed at this cinema. I built my career here, and it means more to me than I’ll ever even be able to put into words. This is home. Tower Theater is a welcoming hub for culture and features programming that you can’t find anywhere else in this city. Miami Dade College has turned the space into one of the most important homes for independent cinema in a city that claims to love art. This is flat out wrong and will do nothing but harm our city and our film community at large.
