Let’s take a look at each category and how they correlate to your lymphatic system (LS) and health: Massage/Bodywork- These modalities are great for the musculoskeletal (and nervous) system, which permits movement of the body, helps maintain posture, and circulates blood and lymph with muscle activation. Tight muscles and fascia create a physical barrier that’s hard for lymph to get through. These modalities don’t drain our lymph but it DOES create an opportunity for ease of flow so that our body can do its magical thing. Cosmetic Lymph- Some are great for the LS of those who are in good health and wish to maintain, as well as achieve a specific, temporary esthetic. The cosmetic side breaks down into two subcategories; humans and machines. Humans- Maya, wood therapy, body contouring, and Brazilian use a fast tempo rhythm with hands and/or tools to force the lymphatic fluid from the deep lymphatic vessels. These structures tend to accompany ARTERIES (which carry blood AWAY from the heart) and drain deeper structures like the internal organs. Training within any given cosmetic modality can be spotty which is why I do not recommend it often. In my observation, too big an emphasis of training is dedicated to marketing strategy vs. anatomy/physiology/safety. However, educated, safe, and passionate practitioners DO exist! Machines: Lasers, suction, compression etc. are SO hit or miss thanks to the FDA. Zerona (rated 46% on Realself.com, average cost: 1.5k) and Endermologie (rated 68%, average cost $850) are...fine. Average treatments are 12-16 sessions to see “results” and require follow ups to maintain them. “Come back forever!” Cool, but are these ACTUALLY results then? I don’t think so. 👏 Clinical Lymph: These delicate touch modalities focus on the anatomy and physiology of the LS. Our main targets are the superficial lymphatic structures that tend to accompany VEINS (which carry blood back to the heart) but we also reach the deep channels too! Painlessly and effortlessly. How? We only swim upstream when we need to, and we use your nervous system as a propeller to help us get there. Rad. More isn’t always better... BETTER is better.
