I studied the yearbook Michael gave me and visited the school he attended in 1970, the year he was not homeschooled. I stayed for a few days, and attended the graduation weekend of 2018. I pretended the girls I saw graduating, were the same girls Michael wrote about, in the yearbook he gave me. She looks like Jackie Portney. Michael loved Jackie. ‘But homeschooling made it impossible for us because I never developed social skills, and didn’t dare to talk to the girls’, he said. ‘Rather than get to know and date a gorgeous, charming, amazing girl, it was just a hell of a lot easier to stay away from the girls I was dying to meet. The Grand Canyon between me and the girls I was crazy about made it emotionally impossible for me to ever seriously try to get to know them, and it was just too much risk in disappointment from rejection. I had no clue as to how or what to talk about, or have any effective conversation’, Michael wrote. ‘So why cause myself such pain?’ Those images are part of my project Michael.
