Collecting abandon ghost nets from the oceans and beaches close to Shaviyani Atoll which are the silent killers of the ocean, responsible for the death of over hundreds of marine life such as sea turtles, dolphins, sharks, whales and crustaceans year over year, are turned in to bespoke souvenirs at the Fairmont Maldives Sustainability Lab which could be purchased to fund our Fairmont Award Scheme for schools. We’ve partnered with 7 local schools on neighbouring islands, and in exchange for plastic waste collected by the schools, we turn their waste into useful equipment such as rulers and school clipboards. The proceeds from the sales specifically goes into funding the acquisition of additional molds the schools have requested would’ve useful, for example a pen mold, will go into producing classes and hosting workshops for children on climate change, waste management and ocean conservation, and finally goes into funding two sustainability labs next to the schools who are the most engaged in the project.
