According to Universal Music, there’s a tradition in Alberta called the prisoner exchange. The radio rep from Calgary (in this case, Jasmine) drops us off in Red Deer for an interview, and then we get picked up by her colleague (John) to take us Edmonton and do more promo. Red Deer is exactly half way. Promo is a part of the job that we’ve managed to make fun, but it’s taken a lot of persistence + observation + communication to understand how we can excel in these (sometimes strange) environments. We’ve been lucky enough to pitch ideas to radio stations and other media partners about events that we’d actually find good. Concepts that will reflect our music + personalities in the best possible way. Last time we were in Edmonton we asked our pal Craig at Weekly Trim to give us and our fans haircuts.It made for a better hang and memory. Today in Edmonton we told stories and played songs at a very cool brewery called Sea Change hosted by our friends at Sonic. It’s a part of the job that musicians often have a hard time navigating: how to play nice while also getting what you want. The reality is that every media partner has their own set of priorities and powers they’re beholden to, but if you share a good working relationship then good things can be accomplished. We always try to start with the idea that there should be a collective pursuit of FUN for everyone. We are playing Grande Prairie for the first time in years. Bringing a big show to a small town is a risk that we’re up for. A lot of acts don’t bother. Edmonton John said the last time he was in GP for a show was 2005 for Black Eyed Peas. I texted Will.I.Am. about it, and he told us he wasn’t sure if they’d know all the hits. I replied to Will, “Where’s the luv, man?” But we’re doing it. We like to believe that there is no better ad for our band than seeing us in real life, so we’re pumped to make some new friends. Let’s go GP and make a memory for life!!!
