Van Gogh painted this flower still life after discovering the work of the Southern French artist Adolphe Monticelli in Paris. Vincent was impressed by his emphatic brushwork and his habit of using generous amounts of paint. When Van Gogh himself later lived and worked in the South of France, he was certain that he would continue to use colour like Monticelli ‘as if [he] were his son or his brother.’ 1.🌻 Vincent van Gogh, Vase with Chinese Asters and Gladioli (1886) 2.🖼 Adolphe Monticelli, Vase with Flowers (c. 1875) #vangoghmuseum #vincentvangogh #flowers #stillife #painting
