I'd like to use these two images of @henrygolding as an educational example for photographers. So I was assigned to shoot for @townandcountrymag photograph him in Paris in a Hotel. I wanted take some images on this tiny tiny balcony with the view because other than that I was limited to the hotel room. Right when we wanted to start shooting out there the harsh mid day sun came out. So "not ideal" for shooting outdoors... at least that's what they tell you on youtube videos and useless photo education books.
My point is; there is no wrong. Just make it work in a different way. So I decided to take one with the view and had Henry tilt his head rather up. But I also wanted a portrait and I did not like the harsh light on him so close up. One tool that I always have on shoots are several flags (black light soaking fabric). So I head my assistant holding the flag above his had which made him stand in the shade. Of course the background got too bright but I wanted to expose on the subject. Who cares if the background is a little "blown". My first tip, always rethink before you don't do something just because people say "it's not done like that"
I was shooting this with a Leica Q2. For those of you who do not know, it has a 28mm fixed focal length. So I was limiting myself in many ways; the location, the light and the focal length. What I'm saying is that sometimes if you give yourself too many options it can be confusing and you won't be able to truly focus on the image and the subject anymore.
