Local Red Crosser Lisa McGee is among hundreds of disaster workers currently deployed to western Alaska. She is stationed in Bethel, a small hub town that's serving as a staging area between approximately 50 remote villages and Anchorage, a distance of nearly 500 miles. Each day, Lisa travels by small plane and ATV to these villages as part of a two-person Red Cross reconnaissance team. Here, she meets with tribal and government leaders to assess needs and provide culturally respectful support. So far, Lisa’s team has visited the villages of Quinhagak, Chevac and Akiachak. Despite the challenges, she said the tribal leaders have been “very warm and welcoming." Their discussions focus on infrastructure damage, like roads, power lines, homes, public buildings and utilities. Across the villages, she has observed widespread destruction of boats, fish and smoke houses, fish camps and fishing equipment, which are critical to the residents' culture and sustenance.
