The Hawaii season is in full effect and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss these moments. Pipe Masters 2000. Based on the angle of the sun I’m guessing it was my quarterfinal heat vs. Andy Irons. Andy had just beat Kelly in the round before, so he was fired up. The waves were absolutely pumping and I had one of the best heats of my life... that was the only way I was going to have a chance against Andy. I watched Andy paddle into one of the craziest waves I’ve ever seen in person. Free fell out of the sky on a 10 ft double up, knifed his rail in and squeezed under the lip to then stand up tall... lucky for me the wave morphed into something that gave Andy no exit.
I surfed my next heat (semi final) against Renan Rocha and then the final against an inform Mick Lowe.
So, to sum it all up...There are times in your life when a lifetime of experiences all come together and all the hours that we dedicate to the one thing you love the most fall into place to give you the most magical day of competitive surfing. I surfed in a lot of heats throughout my competitive career and in the end, there was only a few that really stood out. This was one.
