I made a fine-art newsprint titled “The Quarry” and self-published it in May of 2022. It took twelve months to finally produce this work in print, a true labor of love. I worked with a writer called @vivian.ewing and made the 16 included images alongside her original short story, the subject matter being young adulthood in coastal Maine. Working with @vivian.ewing was motivating and inspiring, she is brilliant. Books are and have always been my thing, which makes being included alongside the work at @photoeyebooks such a big deal for me. This summer I read the @odetteengland monograph Dairy Character and was completely taken off guard by how much it resonated. I had heard of her through another photo friend (hi @notthatbush 🙋🏼‍♀️) and let’s just say I felt (and feel) an immediate deep respect for her. The day she reached out to let me know she would be reviewing this work was one of those hard days as a working artist where my edges felt like they were in crisis - I was immediately lifted. Reading this review made the hairs stand up on my arms. I feel so grateful for the time taken to see this work and for my growing photography community. Thank you Odette. I want to say, lastly, that this work was printed on Newsprint because it’s unfussy. My ideal was seeing this work on young adults walls and that has been realised (thank you @s.lytton). What makes The Quarry special is how Morlet and Ewing mine the aches and dreads of being a teenage girl and merge them with the exquisiteness of desire and freedom and the costs thereof.
