Iggy the Eskimo was a mysterious woman who suddenly appeared in the 1960s London Scene. She was popular and in all the cool circles; she was a model, and girlfriend of Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd. She looked like nobody else at the time. When people asked her where she was from, she'd tell them she was from the Himalayas or she'd say she was an Eskimo (or Inuit) and soon she was known as Iggy the Eskimo. She was free-spirited, magnetic, adventurous, mysterious; a true daughter of the 60s.
Iggy began dating Syd Barret of Pink Floyd who at the time was releasing his debut solo album titled 'The Madcap Laughs'. In fact, Iggy is seen posing nude on the famous back cover of The Madcap Laughs album, which gave her a cult following in the years to come. Iggy was also the one who put eyeliner around Syd's eyes giving him his look (photo 4 & 5). (I can't post the back cover of the album because it would get flagged for nudity but do Google it).
One day Iggy mysteriously vanished just as quickly as she had appeared. Over the years, a fan club called 'The Holy Church of Iggy the Inuit' formed and grew on the internet. Almost 40 years later, they found her and brought her back into the spotlight.
It turned out that Iggy's mother was from Mizoram, situated at the North-East of India, sharing borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar, and her father was an English officer in the British army (photo 8). Her real name was Laldawngliani. She was born in Pakistan just a few months after Partition. They eventually moved to England and Iggy ran away from home at the age of 14.
Iggy never vanished, she just moved on from Syd's life. In the 70s she found work on a horse farm where she met her husband (photo 9 is her as a bride). They moved to a small village in West Sussex. She worked at a supermarket and there are stories in Pink Floyd fan sites about her getting fired for throwing groceries at customers who showed her disrespect. Ironically, she revealed that she wasn't much into Pink Floyd's music but was more of a motown girl. The whole time she had no clue there was this fandom for her on the internet.
In 2017, Iggy passed away at the age of 69.
